ABV: 7.7
So first off, scotch ales are pretty much just strong ales. Stronger flavor, heavier, and higher alcohol content.
This definitely fit that profile! It poured a dark amber color and smelled just like the holidays! It was heavy, so glad this one was towards the end of the night, after I’d finished eating! In fact this one of us ordered this one and another ordered the Icon Blue – Chocolate Weizenbock. So I guess you could say we were getting dessert after dinner!
It was very sweet, but the carbonation and bitterness at the end gave it a nice clean, dry finish. Initial taste was creamy with subtle hints of November and December flavors! All the flavors you expect over the holidays, the sweetness and the spices. Especially the spices, it was heavily spiced, like a pumpkin spice.
The alcohol flavor was very strong, as expected out of a scotch ale, but I think it was a good buffer to the sweetness. It took some of the sweet out of the aftertaste and worked in conjunction with the spice. All in all this one was pretty complex with a lot of different flavors.
